SharePoint 2010 – Choosing a Workflow Authoring Tool

Microsoft Technet has an article titled Choose a workflow authoring tool (SharePoint Foundation). There is a helpful table at the end of this article that describes what you can do in SharePoint Designer versus Visual Studio WF Designer tools:
SharePoint Designer Workflows Only
  • Deploy workflow remotely
  • Use Visio to create workflow logic
  • Able to restrict workflows to only actions approved by site admins
  • Don’t need to write code

Visual Studio WF Designer Workflows Only

  • Can make workflow available across the farm
  • Can modify workflow while running
  • Can create custom activities
